Press to Handstand
Press up into a handstand on straight arms, with no jump and no kick: the shoulders move forward over the hands and the straight legs lift through an L position into one line. Rulebooks and trainers differ on what counts and on how to learn it.

What it is
The straight-arm press to handstand lifts the body from the floor into a handstand without bending the elbows, jumping or kicking. From a standing pike, with the hands on the floor and the feet on the floor, the shoulders move forward over the hands, the hips rise and the legs lift, straight, through an L position until the hands, shoulders, hips, knees and feet are in one line. CaliContest's rulebook defines the standing press with straight arms and legs, and its general definition of a press asks for no movement of other parts of the body; the biomechanics study this page relies on (Mizutori and colleagues) describes a press done without recoiling. The Legendary Strength glossary divides presses into straight-arm and bent-arm ones; this page is about the first.2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …6Kinematics and joints moments profile during straight arm press to handstand in male gym…Mizutori, Kashiwagi, Hakamada, Tachibana, Funato · PLoS ONE 16(7):e0253951, 2021 · peer-reviewed, …11Glossary of Hand Balancing TermsLegendary Strength, no author named · read 21 Oct 2026; used only for the entry 'Press': straight-…
Rulebooks list the element, but they do not agree on what counts. FIG's men's code of points lists a press to handstand with the legs together among the floor elements, either as a piked body on straight arms or as a straight body with bent arms. It also asks for straight arms in strength presses, with a deduction otherwise, and does not credit a press if the gymnast steps or lowers the legs to the floor during it. CaliContest lists the standing press and the press from an L-sit as separate elements and does not allow bent arms or bent legs in its definition. The Austrian SWA rules name the Handstand Press as an example of strength dynamics, the WSWCF element list gives 'press to handstand' 0.1 in its 'push move' column, the lowest value there, shared with the handstand push up, and the Italian FIF code lists presses to handstand as straddle and full forms. Apart from CaliContest's short description of the standing press, none of these texts explains the technique.1Men's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points 2025-2028Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Men's Technical Committee · PDF, 137 pages; re-rea…2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …3Calisthenics Championships 2025: Freestyle Calisthenics Regulations V.2.0Calisthenics & Street Workout Association Austria (SWA; the document calls the body 'Austrian Asso…4Freestyle Elements Code of Points (WSWCF), sheet CE26-SzarkaWorld Street Workout & Calisthenics Federation · spreadsheet uploaded May 2026; re-read 21 Oct 202…12Calisthenics Skills Challenge: Codice dei punteggi (2023)Federazione Italiana Fitness (FIF) · PDF in Italian; opened 21 Oct 2026; a table that lists presse…
Straddle and pike are leg positions, not different names. CaliContest allows the straddle version in its beginner list and puts the full version, with the legs together, in its intermediate list; FIG's item names legs together. The Lost Art of Hand Balancing pages call the straddle the first straight-arm press to work on. Its list of bent-arm presses puts the pike press after the straddle press and says that legs together decrease your leverage and force you to counterbalance further out, but that statement is about bent-arm presses. GymnasticsHQ says most gymnasts straddle their legs up. These are trainers' statements, not measurements.1Men's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points 2025-2028Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Men's Technical Committee · PDF, 137 pages; re-rea…2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …8Straight Arm Press and Straddle Press (tag pages)Lost Art of Hand Balancing (Logan Christopher and other authors, posts from 2010 to 2015) · archiv…9How to Do a Press HandstandGymnasticsHQ (author 'Jessica') · 7 Jun 2026; read 21 Oct 2026; a commercial blog about the press …
Other presses are not this page. Bent-arm presses are a different movement: the Overcoming Gravity chart has a separate ladder for them, CaliContest lists elbows-bent versions as their own elements, FIG lists them as their own entries on rings, and FIG's floor item names a bent-arm press with a straight body in the same entry as the piked straight-arm press. The frog stand press is one of them. Stalder press, planche press and one-arm press are separate elements in the WSWCF list; CaliContest lists the stalder press as its own element and uses 'press' as a dynamic component of other skills. A tuck is also used as a leg position by some trainers; this page does not cover it.1Men's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points 2025-2028Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Men's Technical Committee · PDF, 137 pages; re-rea…2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …4Freestyle Elements Code of Points (WSWCF), sheet CE26-SzarkaWorld Street Workout & Calisthenics Federation · spreadsheet uploaded May 2026; re-read 21 Oct 202…5Overcoming Gravity, 2nd edition: progression charts (public spreadsheet)Steven Low · Google Sheets export; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the 'Straight Arm Press HS' ladder (wall, …8Straight Arm Press and Straddle Press (tag pages)Lost Art of Hand Balancing (Logan Christopher and other authors, posts from 2010 to 2015) · archiv…
The evidence is thin. Mizutori and colleagues (2021) is the one peer-reviewed study of the floor press that this page found: 59 male gymnasts, average age 16.4 years, doing a straight-arm press with the legs together from the floor. It splits the press into lift-off, L position and handstand, and says in its abstract that the more skilled gymnasts used a more acute pike at lift-off, although its results text gives the hip-angle difference in the opposite direction for the same part of the movement. It covers young men, the floor and one way of doing the press, it has no EMG or flexibility measurement, its figures were not checked for this page and its text has other inconsistencies, so this page repeats no numbers from it beyond the sample. The 2025 review of handstand biomechanics includes it and also lists an older model of the press handstand (Prassas, 1988), which this page did not read, so earlier work exists.6Kinematics and joints moments profile during straight arm press to handstand in male gym…Mizutori, Kashiwagi, Hakamada, Tachibana, Funato · PLoS ONE 16(7):e0253951, 2021 · peer-reviewed, …7Biomechanical analyses of the handstand: a systematic reviewMcDonald, Baker, Gu, Ugbolue · Frontiers in Sports and Active Living 7:1694648, 2025 · systematic …
The difficulty shown here, advanced, is an editorial estimate, not a certified scale. The sources point in different directions: CaliContest allows the straddle version for beginners and asks for the full version at intermediate level, and the WSWCF list gives the element its lowest value, shared with the handstand push up, while the movement needs a free handstand and, by several trainers' accounts, flexibility. No source gives one difficulty class that the others share: each uses its own levels or points, and they are not comparable.2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …4Freestyle Elements Code of Points (WSWCF), sheet CE26-SzarkaWorld Street Workout & Calisthenics Federation · spreadsheet uploaded May 2026; re-read 21 Oct 202…

How it is done
- 1
Start in a standing pike
Stand folded forward with the hands on the floor, the arms straight, the legs straight and the feet on the floor, and the hips high. CaliContest's definition asks for straight arms and legs and a body closed in compression with the hips up; Mizutori and colleagues had the gymnasts start with the hands about shoulder-width apart.2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …6Kinematics and joints moments profile during straight arm press to handstand in male gym…Mizutori, Kashiwagi, Hakamada, Tachibana, Funato · PLoS ONE 16(7):e0253951, 2021 · peer-reviewed, …

Shift the shoulders forward and lift the feet
Move the shoulders forward over the hands until the feet come off the floor, with the hips folded. GymnasticsHQ and Torokhtiy describe the shoulders going forward over the hands and then back, and Torokhtiy says the hips have to be over the hands before the feet leave the floor. Mizutori and colleagues say the more skilled gymnasts used a sharper pike at lift-off, with a fully flexed hip, but the paper contradicts itself on the hip angle. These sources do not settle where the weight sits at this moment, and the picture is a model.2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …6Kinematics and joints moments profile during straight arm press to handstand in male gym…Mizutori, Kashiwagi, Hakamada, Tachibana, Funato · PLoS ONE 16(7):e0253951, 2021 · peer-reviewed, …9How to Do a Press HandstandGymnasticsHQ (author 'Jessica') · 7 Jun 2026; read 21 Oct 2026; a commercial blog about the press …10How to Do a Press Handstand? 5 Essential PointsTorokhtiy (commercial brand; author Oleksiy Kononov, reviewed by O. Lift the straight legs to the L position
Keep the legs and the arms straight while the legs rise until the trunk is vertical over the hands and the legs are level. What to have first
A free handstand
GymnasticsHQ says to master a regular handstand before learning the press. The Lost Art of Hand Balancing names a free handstand as a prerequisite for its series of bent-arm presses; for straight-arm presses it names none. Hold times and repetition counts that appear in the sources (one article on bent-arm presses, one children's gymnastics test quoted by Torokhtiy) belong to other contexts, and this page does not turn them into targets.8Straight Arm Press and Straddle Press (tag pages)Lost Art of Hand Balancing (Logan Christopher and other authors, posts from 2010 to 2015) · archiv…9How to Do a Press HandstandGymnasticsHQ (author 'Jessica') · 7 Jun 2026; read 21 Oct 2026; a commercial blog about the press …10How to Do a Press Handstand? 5 Essential PointsTorokhtiy (commercial brand; author Oleksiy Kononov, reviewed by O. Flexibility and compression
The Lost Art of Hand Balancing says straight-arm presses require more flexibility, as well as a different kind of strength, than bent-arm presses; Torokhtiy says to push and round the back to compress the body and that the more flexible you are, the less lean you need at lift-off. Step 1·Intermediate
Press from raised feet
Do the press from a pike with the feet on a raised support, such as a box. The Overcoming Gravity chart has a step abbreviated 'Ele' that its key does not explain, and reading it as 'elevated' is this page's guess; the Lost Art of Hand Balancing pages describe doing the straddle press with the legs on a raised support and lowering the support until it is done from the floor.
Technical note: The picture shows a pike with the feet on a box. The trainers' version is a straddle, which cannot be drawn truthfully from the side.5Overcoming Gravity, 2nd edition: progression charts (public spreadsheet)Steven Low · Google Sheets export; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the 'Straight Arm Press HS' ladder (wall, …8Straight Arm Press and Straddle Press (tag pages)Lost Art of Hand Balancing (Logan Christopher and other authors, posts from 2010 to 2015) · archiv…

Step 2·Advanced
Straddle press
Do the press from the floor with the legs apart on the way up. CaliContest allows it in its beginner list, the Lost Art of Hand Balancing pages call it the first straight-arm press to work on, and GymnasticsHQ says most gymnasts straddle their legs up.
Technical note: Legs apart are not visible from the side, so the picture shows the L position with the legs together.2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …8Straight Arm Press and Straddle Press (tag pages)Lost Art of Hand Balancing (Logan Christopher and other authors, posts from 2010 to 2015) · archiv…9How to Do a Press HandstandGymnasticsHQ (author 'Jessica') · 7 Jun 2026; read 21 Oct 2026; a commercial blog about the press …

Step 3·AdvancedGoal
Full press, legs together
Do the press from the floor with the legs together, straight and without a jump. FIG's item names legs together, and CaliContest puts its 'Full' version in the intermediate list.
Technical note: Full describes the position, not a hold time or a number of repetitions. Common mistakes
Kicking or jumping instead of pressing
Torokhtiy says the movement is done without accelerations to kick up rapidly, and CaliContest's general definition of a press asks for no movement of other parts of the body. Shoulders too far ahead of the hips
Torokhtiy warns that if the shoulders travel too far in front of the hips you will likely fall down. It is one commercial page's statement, and Mizutori and colleagues report, for one highly skilled gymnast, how the centre of mass moves relative to the centre of pressure during the press, so these sources do not give a simple rule.6Kinematics and joints moments profile during straight arm press to handstand in male gym…Mizutori, Kashiwagi, Hakamada, Tachibana, Funato · PLoS ONE 16(7):e0253951, 2021 · peer-reviewed, …10How to Do a Press Handstand? 5 Essential PointsTorokhtiy (commercial brand; author Oleksiy Kononov, reviewed by O. CaliContest's definition does not allow bent arms or legs or an arched back, and FIG asks for straight arms in strength presses and deducts when they bend. A press with bent arms is a different movement in the Overcoming Gravity chart and in CaliContest; FIG's floor item allows it in the same entry.1Men's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points 2025-2028Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Men's Technical Committee · PDF, 137 pages; re-rea…2Regolamento CaliContest 2025-2026CaliContest (Italian calisthenics competition circuit) · PDF in Italian; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the …5Overcoming Gravity, 2nd edition: progression charts (public spreadsheet)Steven Low · Google Sheets export; re-read 21 Oct 2026; the 'Straight Arm Press HS' ladder (wall, …
